Christmas and Romantic Traction! (For Men Only)

Traditionally, Christmas doesn’t give us as much romantic traction: some times of year are a little harder to be romantic! I mean by this that it may be harder to find a romantic card at my local Hallmark store during Christmas. Birthdays, Anniversaries, and Valentine’s Day are easy in comparison. But men, we can still shine with romantic brilliance during this Season (who knows where that might lead?!) and impress our wives to no end!

Men, Here are Four Simple Ideas:

  1. Learn More About Romance:
Remember, to develop romance, we focus primarily on emotional intimacy and the things that help us grow closer to our lover as it relates to connecting with her feelings.
However, romance also needs intellectual intimacy--we must grow closer by understanding our lover. Herein is a man's biggest challenge!

Most men know women want romance, but aren't quite sure what to do; they discover many unspoken expectations that easily sabotage any sort of "recipe approach" to romance! The solution is to become a student of your wife--learn how she thinks: her likes, dislikes, opinions, attitudes, and values.

  2. Watch a Romantic Christmas Movie with Your Wife. Here are the top 5:
    • Love Actually (2004)
    • The Holiday (2006)
    • The Family Stone (2005)
    • Noel (2004)
    • The Family Man (2000)

  3. Spend Quality Time Writing a Love Letter
Check out Free Love Letters to Inspire You. Adjust these samples with a few references to Christmas and the wonderful Season!

  4. Do Some Practical Work, Surprising Your Wife!
Bake brownies, clean the kitchen, polish the floors! Your wife will love you for it.

What Has Carrie Been Reading? "God Chicks and the Men They Love"

I clocked a lot of kms on my treadmill while reading this book authored by Holly & Philip Wagner and thoroughly enjoyed the journey!

I was given a copy of the Wagner's most recent book by my good friend, Beth Fleming who pastors Koinonia Christian Fellowship here in South-Western Ontario with her husband, Steve. I'd like to share just a few highlights of the God Chicks book with you!

  • Holly & Philip emphasize the importance of both spouses being dedicated to their own personal growth. As both husband and wife grow personally, they bring health to the marriage relationship. "A healthy relationship is when two wholes come together." I feel so secure in my marriage because I see how Jim works on his personal growth: he listens, reads, and attends seminars on topics that inspire and teach him to become a better leader, husband, and father.
  • I really appreciated Philip's letter to his 17 year old daughter, Paris. His love for her was obvious as he passed on wise advice about qualities Paris should look for in a future husband. Though, at first glance, the book is mainly written for married couples, Philip and Holly share lots of truth in their God Chicks book that single young people would benefit from!
  • The chapter about 5 Qualities of a Thriving Relationship was filled with practical truths! Here are the 5 qualities they listed:
    1. Honor: communicate admiration and respect not only to your spouse but also to others
    2. Communication: listen, understand, communicate your commitment, appreciation, and expectations clearly
    3. Patience: take time to focus on strengths rather than weaknesses
    4. Follow-Through: dependability and faithfulness
    5. Humility: have a willingness to admit your failures and ask for forgiveness
  • Conflict is inevitable. You are not your spouse's enemy! Philip and Holly teach the important skill of conflict resolution.
  • The final chapter "S.E.X. is Not a Four Letter Word" was refreshing to read! The Wagners discuss the benefits of sex in marriage, qualities of great sex, and tools for great sex.

Though God Chicks and the Men They Love is an easy read, it is chock full of excellent marriage advice! Philip and Holly share candidly and remind us that "when you learn to become allies instead of adversaries by respecting each other's unique gifts, abilities and perspectives, you will be unstoppable in your God-centered life together!

Visit the God Chicks website for more information including short videos where you can hear Philip and Holly discuss the topics in each chapter of the book.

Thanks for reading! We'll be in touch again in 2011!

Have a Blessed Christmas and a Very Happy New Year!

Sincerely,

Jim and Carrie
