Song of Solomon Bible Study

Song of Solomon Bible Study Part One

No other book in the entire Bible has drawn as much controversy as The Song of Solomon (aka Song of Songs). Yet, surprisingly, even people who would call themselves Christians rarely read it! However, there is within this ancient book of erotica a goldmine of instruction as current and relevant today as it was centuries ago!

Within the 8 chapters of the Song of Songs, we learn about:

  • Romantic Attraction
  • Dating and Courtship
  • Intimacy
  • Conflict
  • Romance
  • Commitment

Song of Solomon Bible Study: Chapter 1

Song of Solomon Bible Study

These first verses are spoken by a peasant girl to King Solomon when he was a young man.

verse 2: … May he kiss me with the kisses of his mouth.

Don't you like how this starts!

verse 3: …Your name is like purified oil; therefore the maidens love you.
Names bring impressions. Michael Jordan, Paris Hilton, Bill Gates, Michael Jackson—what came to your mind when you read each of these names? Whatever came to mind was an indication of the actions and character of the person named. The young lady here in chapter one is remarking how the young man’s name evokes feelings of admiration from the young women—he has a great reputation! His character has preceded him!

verses 5 and 6: …I am black but lovely, O daughters of Jerusalem… My mother’s sons were angry with me; they made me caretakers of the vineyards, but I have not taken care of my own vineyard.

The young maiden is a beautiful girl, but the emphasis here is on her character. She is obedient to authority (her brothers) and works hard. Attraction between people based on appearance is natural; at the end of the day, though, it is character that really counts!

verse 7: For why should I be like one who veils herself beside the flocks of your companions?

The maiden contrasts herself with the prostitutes (see Genesis 38:15) in the area. She states she is not like them! This is a statement illustrating her personal purity.

In this introductory section of chapter one, we have seen that both the young man and young woman are physically attracted to each other. More importantly, they are both seen to possess good character and purity. One of the lessons we draw emphasizes that character plays a much larger role in a successful marriage—and a successful sex life than we might first imagine.

Be sure to read Song of Solomon Bible Study, Part Two where we conclude the study of Song of Solomon Chapter 1 and begin Chapter 2.

Watch for more articles in the future as we continue the study of this poetic book of the Bible.
